In 1910, Karl Schmidt, the son of NSU Motorenwerke founder Christian Schmidt, founded the company "Deutsche Ölfeuerungswerke". The company Kolbenschmidt was emerged from this company after World War II.
Kolbenschmidt now belongs, likewise Pierburg, to Rheinmetall Automotive AG.
